News: Kentucky Kingdom shuts down Rainbow

Posted at 11:30 AM EDT (1530 GMT)

Jul. 17th, 2008 -- Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom has temporarily shutdown the Rainbow ride in response to an accident involving the same type of ride in Sweden where the ride collapsed injuring around 40 people.

"We have temporarily closed the ride, as a precaution, due to what happened in Sweden," said Kentucky Kingdom spokeswoman Carolyn McLean. She said the ride will remain shut down until further notice.

Kentucky Kingdom is one of about a half-dozen amusement parks in America that have the Rainbow ride.

Officials said it appears that a bearing failed, causing the collapse of the ride in Sweden.

McLean said Six Flags mechanics and technicians will inspect the ride thoroughly before any decision is made to restart it. She also said the state Department of Agriculture, which is charged with inspecting amusement-park rides, also will "look it over."

It's good they are checking it out, but their model has never had problems that I know of.

Must be going over the top with preventative measures to try and make up for last year.

LOL. SF is covering their butts now & scared the same might happen to their ride.

Six Flags does not need any more ride accidents so good for them for shutting the ride down.

Phil- I wouldn't call it o ver the top to shut down a ride of the same design until the cause of the failure is known. A few years ago they closed all of the Chaos model until the cause was known.

I think it is a justified precaution.

I know it's the right thing to do, but it just seems funny that the same park that was coating hydraulic cable in cornstarch last year is shutting a ride down for inspection after something happened with a model halfway across the globe.

Six Flags can't afford more negative publicity after the Batman death and the falling stocks. Glad they are just being safe by shutting it down temporarily.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that Kentucky Kingdom in 07 made no profit, Six Flags needing money, and Kentucky Kingdom rumored to be on the Auction Block.
