News: Cedar Point to host Wheels of Thunder experience

Aug. 14th, 2008 -- SANDUSKY, Ohio, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The ultimate interactive car-racing experience will come to Cedar Point when the Sandusky, Ohio, amusement park/resort will host Wheels of Thunder, a five-day event featuring displays, games and giveaways, Monday through Friday, Aug. 11-15.

Sponsored by Pepsi and AMP Energy, Wheels of Thunder will be a one-of-a-kind exhibit of car-racing activities. These special activities will be held from noon to 8 p.m. near the Blue Streak roller coaster and will include remote control car races, racing simulators, tire-changing competitions, race car displays and daily giveaways. Plus, guests who bring any AMP Energy can will save $8 on a one-day adult admission ticket (only valid Monday through Friday, Aug. 11-15).

Highlighting the event will be special appearances by retired driving legend Rusty Wallace. A former Premier Series Champion and winner of 55 races, Wallace will be at the park from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13 and 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14.

    Other activities during Wheels of Thunder include:

    -- AMP Energy and Pepsi Show Cars;

    -- 2008 Pepsi Racing Simulators that will provide lifelike head-to-head
       racing against the records of top drivers;

    -- The AMP Energy #88 Full Hood Tire Changer Competition where the best
       time each day will win a full-size autographed Dale Jr. car hood; and

    -- AMP Energy remote-control cars featuring #24 Jeff Gordon's Pepsi Racing
       Car, #11 Darryl Waltrip's Retro Mountain Dew Car and the new #88 Dale
       Jr. AMP Racing Car.


Cedar Point will be open daily through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1, plus Sunday, Sept. 7 and Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 12 through Nov. 2, 2008. During Wheels of Thunder, the park will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 9, Cedar Point will be open until 11 p.m.

Why not set this up closer to Top Thrill Dragster? That corner of the park already has some motorsport ambiance... although this exhibit/festival might lead to some congestion along the midway... I guess I answered my own question...

There's not enough room by TTD. It's crowded enough as it is. The Blue Streak plaza is pretty open and usually isn't crowded, so it's the best location for this nonsense.
