Here is a new musical that has taken Broadway by storm. Wicked, The Untold Story of The Witches of Oz gives new life to what has been the traditional story of the Wizard of Oz and takes a look at the witches Glenda The Good Witch and the Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West long before they became the famed characters who met Dorothy. Academy award winner Stephen Schwartz (The Prince of Egypt and Pocahontas) wrote the lyrics and created the music for this modern day new spin on the classic story about Dorothy and her little dog Toto.

This isn’t the same story hashed over though and it’s being met with rave reviews from many visitors who are enjoying this musical that is based on the story by Gregory Maguire that has become a best-selling novel. The award-winning contributions don’t stop there though. Tony Award winner Wayne Cliento (How to Succeed…, Aida, The Who’s Tommy) is responsible for the musical staging. Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Glengarry Glen Ross, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, Take Me Out) is the director of Wicked. Although the show is not intended for children under 4 and not recommended for children under 8, Wicked is an excellent musical that lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Wicked has already won several awards for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Book of a Musical, Outstanding Lyrics and Outstanding Orchestrations and continues to delight audiences around the country and the world. First opened in 2003 at the San Francisco tryout, Wicked has been going strong ever since in famous theaters around the world and on national tours. Visitors to this exciting musical can listen closely and hear some references to the 1939 original version of The Wizard of Oz in the back story, tying this new story line in very effectively.

When Wicked went on tour in 2005, the first week in July, it grossed nearly $ 1,500,000. The Ford Center for the Performing Arts Oriental Theatre was the location for this fantastic opening and many good reviews were to follow as Wicked toured to Universal Studios (Japan), West End-London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Stuttgart, Melbourne, San Francisco, Sydney and Osaka.

With a second national tour that started this year on June, Wicked continues to delight audiences around the world and has more performances scheduled for at least Oberhausen in June, 2010. In Sydney this year in September, many of the Melbourne cast returned and put Wicked in the running for nearly breaking the record for the highest grossing musical ever held at Capitol Theatre. The 2010 performances will begin March 17, 2010 in Oberhausen, Germany at the Metronom Theater Centro. It will be a transfer of the Stuttgart production but casting has not been decided at this point.

For those who have already had the pleasure of seeing Wicked at least once, you know that this great musical is one you can see time and again and it won’t get old. There is also a cast recording of the original Broadway production. Universal Music released this original album in December, 2003 and features all of the songs performed on stage except “The Wicked Witch of the East”. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see Wicked live yet, your chance may come soon at one of the finest theaters in your area. You owe it to yourself to check out Wicked and see what all of the great reviews are about.
