Lightning Lane Is Coming: Disney FASTPASS Kiosk Removal Continues!

Disney officially announced this summer that FASTPASS and MaxPass will not be returning to Disneyland Resort in California (or, for that matter, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida). Instead, an all-new amenity called Disney Genie+ with Lightning Lane will be coming to the theme parks.

What Are Disney Genie and Disney Genie+?

Disney Genie is the new feature coming to the Disneyland app. Disney Genie will help you plan the perfect day at the Parks. Within Disney Genie is the added amenity Disney Genie+, which Disney is describing as a progression of MaxPass. For $20 per Guest, per day, you can utilize Disney Genie+ to get you access to the Lightning Lane (AKA the former FASTPASS line) for many qualifying attractions at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

Keep in mind, though, that Disney Genie+ won’t get you access to every attraction that has Lightning Lane. For the most popular attractions — like Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge — you can purchase Lightning Lane access a la carte for an additional fee per Guest, per attraction.

FASTPASS Kiosks Slowly Removed From Disneyland

We don’t yet have an official debut date for Disney Genie+ at Disneyland Resort. Right now, all we know is that the service is set to debut sometime this fall. However, it appears that Disney is slowly but surely preparing the Park for the switch from the former FASTPASS/MaxPass system to the new Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane system.

Recently at Disneyland, we noticed that several FASTPASS distribution kiosks have been removed from several areas throughout the theme park. Specifically, lately we have noticed that FASTPASS kiosks for Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and Star Tours – The Adventures Continue have been removed from Tomorrowland, Haunted Mansion FASTPASS kiosks have been removed from New Orleans Square, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad FASTPASS kiosks were removed from Frontierland, and Indiana Jones Adventure FASTPASS kiosks were removed from Adventureland.

Not all FASTPASS distribution kiosks have already been removed from Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park, but as the new Disney Genie+ system is entirely digital, it makes sense for there not to be a need for these kiosks anymore, as these used to distribute paper FASTPASS reminders in the past. Many FASTPASS kiosks remain covered up at this time, as well, such as the Matterhorn Bobsleds FASTPASS distribution kiosks pictured below.

Perhaps the next logical step in preparing the theme parks for the launch of Disney Genie will be the removal of FASTPASS signage from the theme park attractions and the addition of Lightning Lane signage at the applicable attraction queues. We have already seen this begin to occur at Walt Disney World — read more here.

For even more convenience and flexibility, there are 2 other options for enjoying our theme parks, through a queue we are introducing called the Lightning Lane entrance that also saves you time in line:

Disney Genie+ Service (Available for Purchase): For the price of $15 per day, per ticket at Walt Disney World Resort and $20 per day, per ticket at Disneyland Resort, choose the next available time to arrive at a variety of attractions and experiences using the Lightning Lane entrance. You can make one selection at a time, throughout the day—from classics like Haunted Mansion to thrill rides like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and newer favorites like Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (attractions subject to limited availability). This convenient option is the next evolution of the fan-favorite Disney MaxPass service from Disneyland Resort. Disney Genie+ will also include Disney parks-themed audio experiences and photo features to capture your memories—unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads from your day if you are visiting Disneyland Resort.
Individual Attraction Selections (Available for Purchase): Schedule a time to arrive at up to 2 highly demanded attractions each day using the Lightning Lane entrance—like Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure Park (subject to limited availability; attractions not included with Disney Genie+). Pricing for this option will vary by date, attraction and park and will be announced closer to launch.
